HIGHLIGHTS
OF THE TOUR
Leaving
the port of Kusadasi, arrive after about one hour the ruins of
Priene, one of the earliest Ionian settlements and the centre
of politics and religion of its time. Here you see the Temple
of Athena, which was built by Architect Pytheos, who was also
responsible for the construction of the Mausoleum at the Halicarnassus,
considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Temple became the classical model for Ionic architecture.
Then you visit the Stoa, the Agora, the Market Place, the Temenos
of Zeus Olympic which dates from the 3rd Century B.C.,the Bouleuterion
which is one of the best preserved buildings in Priene, the Prytaneion
where municipal or state council representatives met, the Theatre
which still retains most of its Hellenistic features, the Sanctuary
of Demeter which was dedicated to the deities of Plenty, Demeter
and Kore, the Archbishop's Church, the Upper Gymnasium and the
Stadium, North-East Gateway, the Temenos of Kybele and the House
of Alexander the Great, where he stayed during his siege of Miletus
in 334 BC. After a ride of 45 minutes arriving in Didyma, you
see the colossal Hellenistic Temple of Apollo, one of the most
sacred places in the ancient world. Lunch break at a restaurant
next to the Temple. After lunch, arriving in Miletus, an ancient
port now in ruins, you first set your eyes on the theatre which
is still impressive as ever. Besides the theatre the possible
visiting sites are the Heroon, the Roman Baths, the Synagogue,
the Harbour Stoa, the Delphinium which was the chief religious
centre where Apollo was worshipped. Leaving Miletus you ride back
to Kusadasi.
