The
Church of St.Saviour in Chora is after Hagia Sophia the most interesting
Byzantine Church in Istanbul. Its mosaics and frescoes are far
and away the most important and extensive series of Byzantine
paintings in the city and among the most interesting in the world.
The name of Chora means "in the countryside", because this very
ancient monastery was attached outside the Constantin walls. Later
when it was included within the Theodosian walls, the name remained.
Afterwards drive along a part of the Byzantine land-walls which
extend from the Sea of Marmara to the Golden Horn. These walls
protected Byzantium from its enemies for more than thousand years,
and in that way profoundly influenced the history of medieval
Europe. The next visit is the Mosque of Eyup, the holiest in Istanbul
; indeed after Mecca and Jerusalem it is perhaps the third most
sacred place of pilgrimage in the Islamic world. This is because
it is the reputed burial place of Eyup Ensari, the friend and
standard-bearer of Prophet Muhammed. Return to pier.
